Target the deficiency of ferritinophagy in menopausal skin 

During menopause, the quantity of iron in the body increases. To better understand the relationship between ferritin, ferritinophagy and menopause, SILAB has developed a novel modeling study that has shown a deficiency of ferritinophay in menopausal skin. In a state of homeostasis, this form of autophagy ensures the controlled release of iron to meet the needs of the cell.

The deficiency of ferritinophagy observed during menopause induces a lack of bioavailable iron, which leads to premature aging of the skin. This phenomenon of metallo-aging is augmented by UV radiation. Indeed, the latter favors the degradation of iron/ferritin complexes, thereby leading to the massive and uncontrolled release of iron and causing significant oxidative stress.

To counter the harmful effects of iron in menopausal skin, SILAB has developed METALLOMIA^®. By relaunching ferritinophagy, the active ingredient facilitates the provision of iron and relaunches the main epidermal functions. In addition, by reducing the iron/ferritin complexes, the active ingredient limits oxidative stress in case of exposure to UV.

A detoxifying action 

Thanks to this targeted mechanism, metallo-aging is significantly reduced. As of 14 days, the skin of Caucasian volunteers is revitalized: the skin barrier is reinforced, and the complexion is unified and radiant. Pigment spots are also significantly reduced in Asian volunteers after 28 days.

In addition, applied by Caucasian volunteers prior to exposure to UV, the active ingredient prevents lipid peroxidation. Within hours after exposure to UV, the appearance of redness is limited.

A traced and secured French supply chain

For the development of METALLOMIA^®, SILAB got interested in the molecular composition of marshmallow roots, particularly rich in mucilages, and has implemented a traced supply chain with French partners. This supply has been validated with the criteria described in the European Pharmacopoeia and by authentication by DNA barcoding. In order to benefit from the richness in mucilages of marshmallow roots, a specific enzyme engineering process was developed to extract polyuronides.

METALLOMIA^® is a patented active ingredient recommended in all care products intended for menopausal skin at a dose of 0.5 à 2%. Available in aqueous solution, it is easy to formulate. It complies with biodiversity regulations and has a natural origin content of 100% (ISO 16128). It complies with international cosmetics regulations (Europe, USA, China, Japan, etc.).
